History for Fantasy Role-Playing Gamers

Ever wonder what the difference is between ale and beer? Need to know the name of that tablecloth knights like to wear over their armor? Want to have some ammo when the PC/GM says, "But in the real Middle Ages, it was like this..."

You've come to the right place!

This page is a collection of essays - with footnotes and everything - about medieval (and other) history. But it's history you can use in your game, and it'll be presented with that in mind. For the scholarly-minded, you can read up on my research standards and techniques. For the rest of you, read on!

The Tavern and Environs

Where do so many adventures begin? Where do adventurers go for rest and succor? To the local tavern, of course! Much of what I have discusses the taverns of Tudor England, as well as the scoundrels and jades who inhabited them. Essays on medieval alcoholic beverages, prostitution, scam artists (with cons to run on the PCs!), and tavern atmosphere.

The Combat Page

To start, this will be a few articles based on personal observation. I participate in mock medieval armored combat, and it gives a few insights into things like wearing armor.
